On March 19, 1997, SquareSoft quietly withdrew page 47 from all retail copies of the official strategy guide. The page detailed an undocumented route through the Shinra Building that ended with the complete erasure of every NPC in Sector 7.
Investigators now believe the route was not a glitch. It was a deliberate design choice that was never meant to be found.
STEP 47-A: After defeating the Turks in the elevator, return to the 59th floor and input the code 6673 into the ventilation terminal. This triggers a hidden timer.
STEP 47-B: Do not exit the building. Remain on the 59th floor for exactly 11 minutes and 47 seconds. The screen will fade to black. When it returns, Sector 7 is gone. Every resident, every building, every line of dialogue—erased.
The page concluded with a single line that has never been reprinted: “This is the only way the plate falls correctly.”
Players who followed the instructions reported permanent save corruption. The game would boot into a silent version of the Sector 7 slums with no music and no NPCs. The only remaining entity was a single unnamed child standing at the edge of the crater.
“I followed the page once. My save file still loads to that empty street every time. I’ve never told anyone the child’s name.”
— anonymous, 1997
“Square told us it was a misprint. But the child knows things about your real-life playtime. It’s not supposed to do that.”
— former beta tester
Why was the page printed at all if it was never meant to be used? Why does the child remember every player who has ever reached it? And why, when the game is left running on that empty street for more than forty-seven minutes, does the screen begin to show faint reflections of the player’s own room?
No official explanation has ever been issued. The page remains the only piece of physical evidence that the disappearance of Sector 7 was not an accident.
