The Subjects

They arrived separately. Each carried a single black duffel and a laminated copy of the same 12-page manifesto. No phones. No assistants. Only the conviction that true leadership required the total removal of comfort.

CHAPTER II

The Manifest

Rule 1. No one leaves the valley before the final fire.
Rule 2. Decisions are made only after 18 hours without food.
Rule 3. Every founder must lead one night watch.
Rule 4. The map is never to be consulted after dusk.

CHAPTER III

Case Timeline

Arrival & Orientation
4:17 p.m. — Subjects hike the final 3.2 miles on foot. First meeting held at the riverbank. One founder is observed writing names in the dirt with a stick.

The Long March
5:00 a.m. — Silent 14-mile loop through the ridge. At mile 9, two founders are seen arguing over water allocation. By evening, a new hierarchy has formed.

The Night Watch
10:00 p.m. — One founder remains awake beside the dying fire. A single page from the manifesto is discovered burned. The others claim ignorance.

The Final Fire
2:40 a.m. — All five sit in a circle. No words are recorded for 47 minutes. At dawn the valley is empty. Only the duffels remain.

Investigators later found the following items at the last known camp:

One half-burned copy of the manifesto, page 7 missing
A single set of boot prints leading into the river
Five laminated name tags, all deliberately torn in half
