THE LOTS

LOT 1 • THE CORE KERNEL

Estimated: $185,000–240,000

The original monolithic kernel, 42,000 lines of tightly coupled logic. Includes all undocumented interdependencies and the celebrated “midnight patch” of 12 March 1994. Offered with full source and the single surviving handwritten flowchart.

Beige mainframe computer from the early 1990s
LOT 2 • THE DATA MODEL

Estimated: $95,000–125,000

Complete relational schema comprising 187 tables, 14 years of accumulated business rules and the infamous “customer” table that contains 11 distinct definitions of “active.” Includes migration scripts written in 1993 that still run.

Wooden filing cabinet drawers filled with index cards
LOT 3 • THE REWRITE PROPOSAL

Estimated: $410,000–480,000

The complete blueprint for a ground-up replacement: clean modular architecture, modern language bindings, zero legacy constraints. 184 pages of specifications, three prototype modules and the original 23-page memo that first proposed discarding everything. This lot carries the right to commence work immediately upon hammer fall.

“The only honest way forward is to begin again. We have the drawings. We have the will. The rest is simply code.”
— Internal memorandum, 9 June 1997

THE PROPOSAL IN BRIEF

A single, decisive act: discard the accumulated technical debt of fourteen years. The new system will be built in a language designed for clarity rather than expediency. Interfaces will be thin. State will be explicit. Every module will be replaceable without ceremony.

Bidders receive the full intellectual property, the right to name the project, and the services of the original three authors for a period of ninety days to ensure continuity of intent.

CONDITIONS OF SALE

All lots sold “as is.” No warranties expressed or implied regarding future maintainability. Payment due within seven days of sale. Successful bidders will receive a leather-bound copy of the source and a brass key to the original tape vault.
