An investigation into the nature of presence, material, and the quiet insistence of things.
What It Is began as a private notebook kept through the winter of 1996. Each morning its author recorded the first object that entered his attention: a cracked enamel plate, a length of twine, the precise angle of light on a wall. Over time these entries revealed a consistent logic.
The project rejects metaphor. Every entry is accompanied by the object or its precise dimensions. No interpretation is offered beyond the record of its weight, temperature, and the duration it held attention.
Thirty-four objects were catalogued before the notebook was closed in March 1997.
1. Presence precedes meaning.
2. The hand remembers what the eye forgets.
3. Silence is the only adequate description.
4. An object is finished when it no longer asks to be explained.
The complete set of thirty-four entries, together with measured drawings and material notes, remains in a single oak box. Access is granted only by appointment in the original studio.
