After months of deliberation among founding members, the Picnic Society today releases its governing charter and bylaws, establishing enduring principles for the annual gathering.
The organization shall be known as the Picnic Society, dedicated to the orderly and convivial enjoyment of outdoor repasts.
To convene once each year in a suitable meadow or park for the purpose of shared sustenance, conversation, and light recreation, free from the encumbrances of daily affairs.
Membership is extended to any person of good character who brings a dish to share and agrees to abide by the bylaws. Honorary membership may be granted to those who have hosted three consecutive gatherings.
The annual picnic shall be held on the third Saturday of July in a public park no less than eight acres in size, selected by the Committee no later than the first of May.
Each member shall contribute one savory and one sweet item. Store-bought items are discouraged. Thermoses of iced tea are to be shared communally.
Conversation shall remain civil. Games of croquet and badminton are permitted; competitive sports are not. Radios and recorded music are forbidden.
In the event of rain, the picnic shall proceed under the largest available trees or, if necessary, be postponed by exactly one week. No refunds or substitutions shall be offered.
Founding members invite fellow enthusiasts to affirm these principles. Endorsements will be recorded in the Society ledger.
